Certified Jet A Piston Engines Retrofit

Jet-A engines are now commonly used in general aviation. High utilization operators, such as flight schools, aerial work companies and surveillance operators, have transitioned to Jet-A engines. They offer significant savings on fuel burn and maintenance costs and down time. Jet-A engines, by using the Diesel cycle, burn less fuel (30 to 40 % less when compared to AvGas engines). Furthermore, Jet-A, in most regions of the world, is significantly cheaper than AvGas. In addition to this, scheduled maintenance intervals are significantly reduced when using a jet fuel piston engine. This means more hours flying and less hours in the maintenance hangar.

Retrofit – The Firewall-Forward-Kit

 At the end of the year 2003, Continental Motors Group took the opportunity to evaluate one year serial production of Centurion 1.7 kerosene piston engine, the predecessor of the CD-135. While shipments to OEM running well, Thielert has recognized some potential to improve the retrofit kits for existing aircraft. In 2003 Continental Motors Group shipped the retrofit engines as an assembly kit with 930 parts. The outcome of the experience with this method is that kits have been shipped completely "firewall forward" pre-assembled and checked since the beginning of 2004. This method is offering the following advantages:

Superior quality of the retrofit kits: Prior to delivery, Continental tests the entire engine system, electronics, cooling, heating and intercooler on own dynamometers. As a certified production organization, Continental Motors Group improves the quality of the assembly and testing of the retrofit kits


2. Shorter aircraft service times: Since the pre-assembled retrofit kit can be installed more quickly at Continental Motors Group distributors, it is possible to reduce the service time of our customers' aircraft.

Continental CD-135 Jet-A Engine  

The CD-135 Jet A piston engine for General Aviation generates a take-off power of 99 kW (135 hp). The CD-135 is a turbocharged, 4-cylinder in-line engine which has been EASA certified since August 2006 and FAA certified since October 2006. Its predecessor has been certified by the European Aviation Authorities since May 2002 and by the FAA since October 2003. The weight of all CD-135 engines is identical to 1.7 l engines, enabling a direct replacement.

Continental CD-155 Jet-A Engine  

The CD-155 Jet A piston engine for General Aviation generates a take-off power of 114 kW (155 hp). The CD-155 is a turbocharged, 4-cylinder in-line engine which is EASA and FAA certified. The CD-155 runs on both jet fuel and diesel (DIN EN590), and accepts any combination of the two.
